മലേഷ്യൻ ഉറുമ്പുകൾ (Camponotus saundersi) Carpenter ants ൽ പെട്ടവയാണ്. ഇവയുടെ ഇളം തലമുറയിൽ പെട്ട ഉറുമ്പുകൾ പടയാളികളുടെ ജോലി ആണ് നോക്കുന്നത്. ശത്രുക്കളായ മറ്റൂ കുഞ്ഞു ജീവികളോ മറ്റു ഉറുമ്പുകളോ ആക്രമിക്കാൻ എത്തിയാൽ ആദ്യം ഇവർ അവരെ ആക്രമിച്ചു , തന്റെ വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ പെട്ട ഉറുമ്പുകളിൽ നിന്നും അകറ്റും. (സാധാരണ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ചെയ്യുന്നത് പോലെ കുടുബാങ്ങങ്ങളെ രക്ഷിക്കനാണിത്) പിന്നീട് രക്ഷയില്ലാതെ വന്നാൽ BOOM !!!! …..സ്വയം പൊട്ടിത്തെറിക്കും!! ഇവയുടെ ശരീരത്തിൽ നിന്നും തെറിക്കുന്ന വിഷമയമായ ദ്രാവകം ശത്രുവിനെ കൊല്ലുകയോ ആട്ടി പായിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യും!
ഈ വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ പെട്ട ഉറുമ്പുകൾക്ക് mandibular ഗ്ലാന്റുകളുടെ വലിപ്പം കുറച്ചു കൂടുതലാണ്. ഈ glands നിറച്ചു വിഷമയമായ കെമിക്കലുകൾ ( polyacetates, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and alcohols) ആണ് അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. അപകട സമയത്ത് ഈ അവയവങ്ങൾ വീണ്ടും വീര്ക്കുകയും അവസാനം അതിശക്തമായി പൊട്ടിത്തെറിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും ( autothysis).
Ants have different ways of defending themselves and their colony, like biting, stinging, or spraying formic acid. But one species takes the defense to the next level. Workers of Camponotus saundersi, and some other Camponotus species, have oversized mandibular glands running through their entire bodies. These glands are filled with a sticky blend of several poisonous chemicals. When a worker has no other option, she can contract her abdominal muscles, which causes the glands to burst, spraying around the contents and terrifying her enemies with an inconvenient surprise. The worker dies in the act (known as autothysis), so we could actually call him a suicide bomber!!!
